NY Mag correspondent placed on leave for relationship with RFK Jr.

New York magazine placed its Washington political correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, on leave Thursday evening for engaging in a “personal relationship” with former presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that was a “violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures.”

Media reporter Oliver Darcy first reported on the leave Thursday and, while New York magazine did not name Kennedy, Darcy identified him as the politician involved. Kennedy was also recently named to Donald Trump’s transition team. Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The magazine said it conducted an internal review of Nuzzi’s work and found “no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias” and said it was conducting a third-party review.

Nuzzi published a profile of Kennedy in November 2023. She told Darcy communication between herself and a “former reporting subject” became “personal,” but that she “did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source” during that time.

“The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict. I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York,” she told Darcy in a statement.

A Kennedy spokesperson told Darcy: “Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”

Nuzzi nor representatives for Kennedy immediately responded to requests for comments Friday morning. Nuzzi was engaged to POLITICO chief Washington correspondent and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza.
